    ABOUT CAN & STRING

    Small on purpose.

Can & String is an independent creative studio built on documentary filmmaking. We take on a few projects a year and give each one the time it needs. When we're given room to do the work right, the results show up where organizations measure them.

    A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER

Can & String started in 2018 as an independent media company. The idea was to find people doing good work and tell their stories well, without a client or a brief. In 2021 I started a brand consultancy called Tailored Creative, doing strategy and creative work for businesses. For a while I treated them as two separate things. Eventually it was clear they were the same work approached from two directions, so I merged them and kept the name I cared about more.

What carried over from both is a stubborn belief in craft. I've been making films for twenty years and I still want to get better at it, because that's the only way I know to stay any good. I don't make hype. In my experience it leaves more people disappointed than it ever lives up to, and I'd rather build something that's still doing its job years from now than something that peaks in a week. I'll pick up any new tool that helps us get there, including the ones that make people nervous. What I won't hand over is the listening, the judgment, and the time it takes to find what's true about an organization before a camera points anywhere. That part has to be done by people, and everything else depends on it.

    THE TEAM

    Portrait of Justin Weber

    Justin Weber

    Founder & Creative Director

Would rather spend a week listening than a day shooting the wrong thing.

Justin has spent twenty years making documentaries and brand films, starting with Drawing Lines Media Group, which he co-founded in 2010. Along the way he overhauled the CL Industries brand into the one the rest of the pool finish industry aspired to, and made the fundraising films for Challenge Enterprises, a nonprofit whose work he counts among his proudest. He was supervising producer on Made to Be Broken, Red Bull’s film on Karl Meltzer’s Appalachian Trail speed record, later licensed to Netflix. He has also led campaigns for Aggreko across South America and built PensacolaBeach.com from a domain name into a destination platform. At Can & String he leads story and creative direction on every engagement.

He grew up around surf & skate culture and now runs long distances, with four 50Ks and a 50-miler behind him. He’s a husband and the father of two boys.

    2012-2014

    Industry Rebrand & Brand Leadership

Trade show infrastructure included.

    2012-2016

    Red Bull Content

    2013-2014

    Nonprofit Rebranding

Directed the rebrand for Challenge Enterprises and produced films for three consecutive 'Night of Celebration' fundraising events. The documentary work contributed to a 60% increase in donations — proof that the right story, told at the right moment, moves people to act.
